Course description

Drawing & Watercolour Painting: Flora, Fauna & Natural Forms (All Levels)

Using nature as a muse, students will learn basic drawing and use of water media. Each week we will explore a different subject of the natural world including plants, animals, landscapes and even weather. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different techniques and materials for producing shape and texture. We will cover basic perspective and composition theory for an overall approach to working with the subject.

The course is aimed at all abilities, from complete beginners to those with previous experience in drawing and painting

What will I achieve?

  • Develop skills in drawing.
  • Compose a drawing to illustrate a natural form to desired outcome.
  • Become confident with graphite, pen, ink and watercolour or gouache as media.
  • Can use the course to explore botanical illustration further in their own time.

Course delivery details

Materials Required : Basics needed for the first class: Pencils-B and 2B, Putty Rubber, Sharpener, watercolour or mixed media paper, watercolour paint: a basic watercolour pan is sufficient for the class. Separate colour suggestions are Prussian blue, Van Dyke brown as well as cadmium red and yellow.

General Information: Putney School of Art & Design Art Shop on site: opening hours: 9.45am-10.30am, 1.45pm-2.30pm, 6.30pm-7.15pm. 10% discount from most local art suppliers with PSAD Student Card. Free WIFI with no password to access images. Café and balcony serving hot lunches and homemade cakes. All students are invited to submit one piece of artwork to the annual Student Summer Exhibition there may also be class shows throughout the year. For pottery and printing subjects all students will be given a free mask and gloves at the start of the course. Photocopies and printing from a memory stick at the school: 10p for A4 and 20p for A3.
