Course description

Egg Tempera

Egg tempera is a painting technique that was a primary method of painting until after 1500 when it was superseded by the invention of oil painting. It is a permanent, fast drying painting medium, consisting of coloured pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder of egg yolk. You will be taught a range of techniques such as sponging, skumbling and building up layers or glazes of colour. You will then develop skills with the medium using brushes and building up your composition layer by layer. You will also learn to make paints using an egg binder and dry pigments. Beginners will have a selection of images to choose from or you may bring your own after the first class. In the beginning it is better to use a small panel and pre-sized composition. You will be encouraged to develop your own style as the course progresses and your skills develop over the year. Opportunity will be given for experimentation with techniques and methods - under guidance.
