Introduction to Illustration

Throughout the year, each term will have a different theme: The autumn term covers LINE, TONE AND COLOUR covering media such as pen, ink and wash and gouache. Spring term is about NARRATIVE AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, and the summer term is focused on COMPOSITION AND DESIGN. Students on the course will develop their work by following weekly and bi-weekly briefs. In a friendly informal atmosphere, students will benefit from peer feedback as well as a weekly 1-1 session with the tutor. Students are welcome to attend individual terms or all three if they wish

By the end of the course you will understand the key points that will enable you to develop your illustrations skills i.e.

  • Keeping a sketchbook as a source of idea
  • Following a brief
  • Experimenting with different media
  • Critical appraisal of your own and others' work, and a sense of how to take it a stage further creatively

Course delivery details

Materials Required: What to bring to the first session: Students will be offered guidance on materials throughout the course. For the first class students should bring a plain A4 sketchbook and pencils. There may also be a materials fee (£10) which will cover some materials for specialised activities, such as monoprinting. General Information: Putney School of Art & Design Art Shop on site: opening hours: 9.45am-10.30am, 1.45pm-2.30pm, 6.30pm7.15pm. 10% discount from most local art suppliers with PSAD Student Card. Free WIFI with no password to access images. Café and balcony serving hot lunches and homemade cakes. All students are invited to submit one piece of art work to the annual Student Summer Exhibition. There may also be class shows throughout the year.
