- understand why incidents involving injury or damage occur
- recognise the hazards likely to be present in their place of work and the type of action which may be needed to control and manage them
- know the specific procedures used in assessing risks, developing control strategies and evaluating performance
- understand the responsibilities of employers and themselves in relation to safety and health and the procedures for dealing with breaches of those responsibilities
- communicate effectively on health and safety matters with those who work for them, with those they report to, and with specialist safety and health practitioners whom they approach for guidance
