The purpose of the California Innovation and Entrepreneurship Study Tour (CIES) is to showcase the two major forces that have made this American state the seventh largest economy in the world: innovation and entrepreneurship.
Innovation is the introduction of a new idea in the form of a new product or service. Entrepreneurship is the dynamic process of creating incremental wealth very often by means of exploiting innovation. Together they make the ultimate driving force of growth behind value creation and growth. CIES addresses entrepreneurship and innovation from a practitioner’s point of view through direct, on-site exposure to the inner workings of some of the world’s most innovative organizations.
Art or Science?
Although extensively studied, innovation and entrepreneurship still remain to many more art than science. Indeed, making either innovation or entrepreneurship happen is hard. Money and technical skills play their part but they are only a portion of the whole story. There is more to it.
An intangible but most important ingredient that cannot be easily put in words or numbers… Companies like Apple and Google have become world leaders not only because they can deliver technological excellence, but also because a unique flavor of corporate culture gives them an edge when they compete against other formidable firms around the world. Culture cannot be taught, but must be experienced. Seeing is believing.
By nearly any measure, California is the world leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. Supported by some of the world’s finest universities andresearch institutions, California is responsible for one in four patents, attracts half of all venture capital and provides 20 percent of all technology jobs in the United States.
We will start our trip in Los Angeles.
Then we will drive to the San Francisco Bay area and Silicon Valley. We will eventually return to Los Angeles via a scenic route and intermediate stops at the vineyards of Paso Robles and the shopping outlets of Camarillo.
The creative capital of the world for the twenty-first century, Los Angeles has emerged as one of the world’s leading business, trade and cultural centers. The city is the largest manufacturing center in the West, one of the world's busiest ports, a major financial and banking center, and the largest retail market in the United States. Its three-tiered, traditional economy (aerospace, entertainment, and tourism) has evolved into a well balanced, multi-tiered economic engine driven by unparalleled access to world markets.
San Francisco Bay Area and the Silicon Valley
It was in Silicon Valley that the silicon-based integrated circuit, the microprocessor, the microcomputer, and the mouse, among other key technologies, were developed, and has been the site of electronic innovation for over four decades, sustained by about a quarter of a million information technology workers.

The California Innovation & Entrepreneurship Study Tour (CIES) Content
The California Innovation & Entrepreneurship Study Tour (CIES) covers the following areas:
Learning to Making it Happen
Although elusive, we believe that neither innovation nor entrepreneurship happen randomly. They can be induced and much can be gained if one systematically keeps track of four core processes:
- Organization: sourcing, securing, allocating, assembling, managing, and scaling human and material resources into business capabilities.
- Productization: discovering, creating, and transforming ideas and technologies into useful, valuable, and reproducible products and services.
- Commercialization: discovering, defining, and transforming realized or unrealized needs and problems into customers and markets.
- Capitalization: the managing of inflows and outflows of capital to transform sweat equity and cash into sustainable profits.
The ultimate goal of CIES is to enable you to relate what you will experience firsthand at the various sites that we will visit with these four core processes. Making this happen will give you the opportunity to benefit from the achievements of highly successful firms and incorporate this know-how into your own organization or as a foundation for a new endeavor.
