Course description

This course introduces students to the essential skills needed to become a successful, professional artist in today’s global art community.

Throughout the course, students will be invited to consider their purpose as an artist and the impact their practice can have in the art ecosystem. Participants will discover how to create a flexible studio environment in which they can apply a range of ways to gain from their ongoing artistic practice. Concepts including valuation and pricing of works of art, effectively negotiating commissions and gallery representation, applying for grants, successfully selling online and the new opportunities created by NFTs will be discussed over the course of the live sessions. Furthermore, students will also hear from expert guest speakers about the global art market, principles of copyright and intellectual property, as well as the importance of careful consideration in placing work in institutions and commercial galleries. At the end of the course, they will complete a short project to apply their newly gained knowledge.
