Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD)

In 2010 the School of Education is launching an exciting new part-time doctoral programme for education professionals. The Professional Doctorate in Education will equip educators to undertake their own research and thereby improve their educational practices and contexts. The Professional Doctorate will bring people together from a variety of sectors to work as a cohort in a series of weekend study schools and then on an extended piece of original research. The programme is directed by Dr Andy Noyes and delivered by an established team of nationally and internationally recognised education scholars who boast a wide range of expertise and experience in research, teaching and policy work.

The programme is divided into three Parts, the first of which consists of four taught modules studied over two years. These focus on the development of the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to become effective and critical inquiring professionals. The Part I modules also give sector specialists the opportunity to work together on issues of common interest. Part II supports participants in the development of a plan for the thesis or portfolio prior to conducting original research in Part III. The individual research project, which will be of direct professional and practical interest, has a degree of flexibility in view of candidates’ diverse professional contexts, practices and personal career trajectories. The whole programme is studied over a minimum period of four years.
