Description:

It is impossible to provide effective dental care without the use of local anaesthetics. This hands-on CPD course is designed for qualified dental hygienists and therapists wishing to refresh their knowledge and skills in local anaesthesia for dentistry. The course will cover both infiltration and inferior dental nerve block techniques and is also suitable for others returning to clinical practice after a career break.  The course is not suitable for those who have been trained in infiltration and are seeking to gain ID block certification.

Aims:

Overall aim:

To provide refresher training in local anaesthesia for dentistry.

Specific aims:

1. To provide learners with an opportunity to deliver intra-oral local anaesthesia in a simulated environment.

2. To increase learners’ confidence when administering local anaesthesia.

3. To achieve better patient and operator experience.

Objectives:

1. To consider head and neck anatomy of relevance to intra-oral anaesthesia in dentistry.

2. To discuss pain neurophysiology and the delivery of local anaesthetics.

3. To explore simple behavioural strategies for managing dental anxiety.

4. To provide a practical session in infiltration and inferior dental nerve block techniques.

5. To provide top tips for giving a painless and successful dental injection.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify anatomical landmarks and structures of relevance to intra-oral anaesthesia in dentistry.

2. Select clinically appropriate local anaesthetic techniques to achieve effective procedural pain control.  

3. Describe techniques for managing dental anxiety.

4. Demonstrate competence when administering intra-oral local anaesthesia in a simulated environment.

5. Use techniques and skills necessary for safe and effective intra-oral anaesthesia.
