Course description

The work of a land-based engineer is diverse, hands-on and skilled: you could be inspecting new and used machinery, carrying out routine or emergency maintenance, assembling equipment, conducting diagnostics or preparing others to use machinery in the workplace. This role is based on the employer’s premises under supervision with some independent work across a diverse range of tasks and machinery, plant and equipment specific to their sector within the land-based engineering industry.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Apprentices who do not hold maths & English L1 or GSCE grades 2 will need to complete these prior to Gateway.

You must have secured a position with an employer and be ready to start working with them before you can begin your apprenticeship course.

Training Course Content

You will learn a range of core knowledge, skills and behaviours including:

  • Preparing new and second-hand machinery for sale or hire
  • Conducting pre-delivery inspection of machinery carried out in accordance with procedures
  • Performing routine service and maintenance operations in accordance with manufacturer’s schedules and employer’s instructions
  • Preparing equipment for repair; cleaning, dismantling and reassembly of machinery and their component parts – under supervision or in accordance with procedures or written briefs
  • Conducting routine machine operation and systems testing
  • Accessing and interpreting technical data relating to service and maintenance operations in accordance with the manufacturer’s documentation
  • Handing over machinery plant and equipment to the control and use of others in the workplace (e.g. Senior Technician)
  • Understanding how to comply with the Health & Safety At Work Act, other regulations and legislation
  • Knowing the company staff handbook, the chain of command, workplace procedures

Course delivery details

Delivered in the workplace with a visit from your Assessor every 10 to 12 weeks and on block release attendance at our Lackham campus (10 weeks per 12-month period so 20 weeks in total for 24-month apprenticeship duration). Your block release at college will be a mixture of classroom-based theory and workshop practical sessions.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you’ll need to record a minimum of 6 hours per week ‘off-the-job’ training time. This can include college attendance, work shadowing, training, workshops, online learning, tutor sessions, revision, webinars, industry visits – anything that supports your learning on the apprenticeship and supported by your dedicated assessor.

This programme is assessed by a portfolio of work-based evidence, assignments, work-based project and professional discussion which prepares you for EPA.

On successful completion of the Land-based Service Engineer Level 2 Apprenticeship you will hold the qualification of the Apprenticeship Standard.
