Course description

Land-based Service Engineering Technicians typically work on site utilising their own initiative in a customer facing role taking health and safety policies, regulations and guidelines into account at all times. They are often called upon to mentor and supervise junior colleagues and dispense advice to customers on machinery selection. This requires a blend of skills, knowledge and behaviours, safe working and environmental practice capabilities covering; power units, power trains, fabrication, mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic system applications. There are many pathways available such as: Agricultural Service Engineer, Construction and Plant Service Engineer or Ground Care Engineer.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Apprentices who do not hold maths & English L2 will need to complete these prior to Gateway.

You must have secured a position with an employer and be ready to start working with them before you can begin your apprenticeship course.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

You will learn a range of core knowledge, skills and behaviours including:

  • Understanding the interface between machine, biological systems and the working environment for example climate, oil, plant and animals
  • Preparing, installing and handover of complex technologically advanced machinery, plant and equipment and the verification of its performance to the manufacturer’s specification and customer’s satisfaction
  • Diagnosing and repairing complex faults in machinery, plant and equipment
  • Conducting complex repairs of machinery, equipment, and their components which may include supervising a junior colleague to assist in aspects of the repair
  • Conducting inspections of machines and the compiling of machinery condition reports
  • Compiling of repair proposals, estimates and quotations and the implementation of timely and costeffective repairs

Course delivery details

Those without a Level 2: delivered in the workplace with a visit from your assessor every 10 to 12 weeks and on block release attendance at our Lackham campus (10 weeks per 12-month period so 30-40 weeks in total for 36 to 48-month apprenticeship duration).

Those advancing from Level 2: delivered in the workplace with a visit from your Assessor every 10 to 12 weeks and on block release attendance at our Lackham campus (10 weeks per 12-month period).

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you’ll need to record a minimum of 6 hours per week ‘off-the-job’ training time. This can include college attendance, work shadowing, training, workshops, online learning, tutor sessions, revision, webinars, industry visits – anything that supports your learning on the apprenticeship and supported by your dedicated assessor.

This programme is assessed by an online knowledge test, practical tasks, presentation and professional interview as part of your EPA.

On successful completion of the Land-based Service Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship you will hold the qualification of the Apprenticeship Standard and can register to become a member of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IArgE).
