Management Systems - Purpose & Framework


Management systems are designed as common frameworks to assess organisational efficiency and the overall performance in the operation chain. By setting common objectives and quality standards, management systems typically concentrate on process optimization, risk management and management values.

The most common management systems concern quality assurance, environmental protection, occupational health & safety and welfare management. The official body that regulates procedures associated to management systems is the International Organization for Standardization.

The International Organization for Standardization

The International Organisation for Standardization is the official institution that regulates the management systems across boarders, by promoting the international ISO standards, aimed at improving the quality of services in all professional domains, with an emphasis on the corporate culture, organisational development, environment protection and health & safety. The International Organization for Standardization was founded in 1947 and ever since it has published more than 19 000 International Standards. Its members include 111 member bodies, 49 corresponding members and 4 subscriber members, covering all continents. 

Environmental Management Systems

The international standard for environmental management, the ISO 1400 provides the directives and recommendations for organizations looking to supervise and control their environmental impact. ISO 14001 and ISO 14004, both released in 2004 focus specifically on environmental management, offering indepth insight on life cycle analysis, communication and auditing.

British Occupational Health & Management System

In the United Kingdom, the official body responsible for the management systems design is the British Standards Institution, which operates under the Royal Charter since 1929. BSI works in close collaboration with the International Organization for Standardization and additionally releases own standards. The most widely implemented refers to health and safety management systems - the Occupational Health & Safety Standards - OHSAS.
