Course description

This qualification is aimed at practicing electricians interested in understanding how to design and install the range of electric vehicle charging equipment and systems available. It aims to provide expert guidance to learners wishing to gain further knowledge and understanding of electric vehicle charging equipment design and installation.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is intended for practicing electricians - learners must hold one of the following:

  • 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)
  • 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
  • 5357 Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification
  • 2356 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker
  • 2346 Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification
  • Other Awarding Organisations Equivalences will also be acceptable
  • Equivalent Historical Qualifications (see EAS Table 4B/4C on latest version)

    or
  • ECS Gold Card, JIB Electrician or Approved Electrician Card

    The qualifications above must have been achieved no more than 5 years prior to starting this qualification or there must be evidence the candidate has remained current by completing relevant CPD such as a City and Guilds 2382 or equivalent.

Training Course Content

  • Know the key requirements relating to electric vehicle charging equipment.
  • Know the different types and features of electric vehicle charging equipment.
  • Designing an installation for electric vehicle charging equipment.
  • Understanding the requirements for inspection, testing, commissioning and handover of electric vehicle charging equipment and circuits.
  • Understanding the use of vehicles as electrical energy storage systems as part of consumer’s installations.

  • IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment 4th Edition (ISBN-13: 9781839531804 approx. £80).
  • Requirements for Electrical Installations, IET Wiring Regulations, Eighteenth Edition, BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (ISBN-13: 9781839532184 – approx. £100)
  • On-Site Guide (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022), 8th Edition (ISBN 9781839532276 – £35 approx.)

Candidates must:

  • Successfully complete 1 supervised individual assignment (2921-301): Short-answer and scenario-based questions. Duration: 90 minutes with pass mark approx. 75%.
  • Permitted Materials: BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations (IET Wiring Regulations) and IET On-Site Guide.
  • Successfully complete 1 online multiple choice test (2921-601): Duration: 45 minutes with pass mark approx. 75%.
  • Permitted Materials: IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation 4th Edition)

    Note: There is no practical assessment for this course, the practical competence requirement will be assessed through the assignment.
