Course description

Safeguarding children is a vital part of a healthcare workers role and their intervention can often be life changing for the child. Understanding key indicators and child abuse signs greatly improves the chances of early intervention. Any member of staff that comes into contact with children must have a basic understanding of child safeguarding and how abuse can impact on a child's behaviour and development.

Objectives

After completing this course, candidates will be able to recognise:

  • The potential indicators of child maltreatment physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect, including radicalisation, child trafficking and female genital mutilation (FGM)
  • The impact a parent/carers physical and mental health can have on the well-being of a child or young person, including the impact of domestic violence
  • The importance of children's rights in the safeguarding/child protection context
  • The risks associated with the internet and online social networking
  • Relevant legislation (i.e. Children Acts 1989, 2004 and the Sexual Offences Act 2003)
  • Be able to act as an effective advocate for a child or young person
  • The potential impact of a parent's/carer's physical and mental health on the wellbeing of a child or young person in order to be able to identify a child or young person at risk
  • Professional role, responsibilities, professional boundaries, and those of colleagues in a multidisciplinary team and in multi-agency setting
  • Risk factors for radicalisation and know who to contact
