This module will enable youto make an in-depth analysis of some of the contemporary issues affecting sexual and reproductive health, focusing on physiological, psychological, psychosocial, cultural, epidemiological and environmental factors affecting individual’s during their life span.

    • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, youshould be able to:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the social context in which sexuality and sexual health is experienced.
  • Critically analyse evidence based knowledge of contraception, sexually transmitted infections, blood borne viruses, gynaecology, sexuality andpsycho-sexual issues.
  • Assess the role of the practitioner when providing healthcare to men and women within sexual and reproductive healthcare.
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the needs of specific groups such as teenagers and other high risk or vulnerable groups.

Training Course Content

Indicative module content includes:

  • Pre-pregnancy planning
  • Assisted conception
  • Early pregnancy complications
  • Men’s health and well-being
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Diagnosis, investigation and management of common gynaecological disorders, for example polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis
  • Urogynaecology
  • Current contraceptive choices
  • Female genital mutilation, labiaplasty
  • Termination of pregnancy
  • Sexually acquired infection
  • Contemporary issues in childbearing
  • Young people and sex.

Course delivery details

For the 2022/23 curriculum, our CPD moduleswill be delivered usinghybrid learning. This means that depending on the subject and content of learning and teaching, modules will mainly be delivered via a combination of face to face and online delivery, as this has worked really well for our practice-based colleagues. A couple of modules will be delivered solely online, however for most modules face to face contact time and attendance at the university will be required.

Learning and teaching methods include:

  • Key theoretical lectures
  • Class discussions and debate
  • Self-directed learning activities
  • E-learning.
