Course description

This qualification is an introduction to the knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment. It can apply to the many varied roles that full and part-time support staff may fulfil including administrative roles, site support roles, technical roles and volunteers, as well as roles that work directly with children and young people in the learning environment. The qualification is aimed at a range of learners, including young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or where English is an additional language, who are thinking of working in a school or college setting.

Suitability - Who should attend?

All applicants must be at least 19 years of age.

Must currently reside in England, in a post code outside of London, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the West Midlands Combined Authority, the Tees Valley Combined Authority, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, the Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Northumberland Combined Authority, the Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield Combined Authority and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Applicants applying to complete this course should preferably hold a prior qualification in the subject area at Level 2 or above, or should hold a full Level 2 qualification. In order to be eligible to complete this course for free, Learners must not already hold a full Level 3 qualification (e.g. four AS Levels or two A Levels etc). If Wiltshire College and University Centre are not able to obtain government funding, then Learners will be expected to pay a course fee of £521 or Learners can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. Learners who live in one of the devolved areas mentioned above can still complete the course for a fee of £521 or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. Training Course Content

This qualification aims to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in school environments. It includes learning about children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare and communication and professional relationships.

This award is made up of four mandatory knowledge-based units:

  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children and young people
  • Schools as organisations
