Parlez-vous français?
Often known as the language of love, French is the official language of France and is spoken as a first language by approximately 90 million people around the world. As well as France, it is also spoken in:
- Monaco
- Luxembourg
- Some parts of Belgium and Switzerland
- Québec, Canada
- North & Central Africa
- Cambodia
- Vietnam
- Madagascar
- Overseas French Territories
In fact, nearly 50% of current English vocabulary is derived from French. Some words commonly used in the English language that are taken from French include 'déjà-vu', 'RSVP' (Répondez s’il vous plaît), 'film noir', 'grand prix', 'avant-garde' and 'faux pas'.
Taking French courses can benefit international business
If you are travelling to France on business, or work with French clients or co-workers, a basic comprehension of French can open many more doors and create a better link between you and your French colleagues. French courses can give you an understanding of the culture of the country you are doing business with, providing a framework for behaviour and differences in values and perspective, allowing you to take this into consideration when conducting business and be a better cross-cultural communicator.
French courses – other reasons to learn
As well as for business, French is also the international language of cooking, literature, fashion, visual arts, dance, theatre and architecture. It is the third most widely used language online, so an understanding of French is beneficial for those working in an internationally-focused online communications role. Because of its analytical structure, French also serves as a great base for learning other languages, especially Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
Who would benefit from taking French courses?
French courses are a great opportunity for:
- Professionals conducting regular business with French speaking clients
- Those planning to visit France for business or pleasure
- Those relocating to France
- Anyone wishing to challenge themselves, take on an extra-curricular activity or gain a more worldly view and appreciation for other cultures.
