Course description
Overview
This course deals with virtually everything that may happen to your suspect from arrival at the station to the moment of leaving. Includes adverse inferences, samples, identification procedures and interviews.
It will update your knowledge as we examine core areas of law and practice skills that are required in order to advise suspects at the police station stage.
Who is this for?
This course will be incredibly useful and relevant for anyone advising suspects at the police station stage; regardless of experience. This includes probation representatives, accredited representatives, solicitors and barristers.
What will you learn?
By the end of this course, you will know how to assist and advise clients at the police station at all stages of the process, including:
- the various options available for the suspect in interview
- whether or not to provide intimate or non-intimate samples
- your role in the interview – what you can and cannot do
- advising clients in relation to handwriting/bank accounts
– it’s all covered on the course and more.

This is a one-day course, with face-to-face dates running for the full day, and online live dates running over two subsequent mornings.

By the end of this course you will be able to:Advise the client in the areas of: identification, handwriting, the searching of bank accounts; pointing out to him his choices and the difference between an ‘adverse inference’ and ‘comment’ at trialAdvise the client on both intimate and non-intimate samples and explain whether or not they have any ‘room for manoeuvre’ in this areaAdvise on whether a written statement and a no comment interview is the best course of action in all the circumstancesRecognise the differences between sections 34, 35, 36, and 37 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 when the matter becomes the subject of a trial at courtUnderstand the difference between the ‘reviews of your client's detention’ and the ‘custody clock’ – they are very different and may be running in parallel (but they may not!)12 useful questions ask the Disclosure OfficerRecognise when you have a conflict and understand the circumstances in which you may still continue to represent one and the circumstances in which you will have lost them allAdvise clients properly on the lawfulness of the ‘strip’ or ‘intimate’ search which was conducted prior to your attendanceExplain your very limited rights as a police station adviserConfidently advise him to talk in his interview or to say nothing
