Course description

The first time a charity takes on property it will generally be a lease. Commercial property terminology is often very new and daunting for charity tenants, and it is important to understand this when negotiating, as well as the technical legal issues that need to be taken into account. COVID-19 has brought these issues into even sharper focus.

Presented by Andrew Small, a partner in the charity team at Russell Cooke LLP who specialises in property, this virtual classroom seminar will explore these issues using a number of case studies. Topics discussed will include legal forms for charities and what it means for them taking a lease, whether charity law requires things to be done differently, and why personal guarantees shouldn’t be used. VAT, SDLT and business rates will also be explored, along with ways of limiting liability, and exiting a lease and sharing occupation.
