On 11 July 2023 the National Security Act became law. Its main objective is to deter, detect and disrupt modern threats to the UK by foreign states. The Act overhauls the offences of espionage and establishes brand-new offences targeting the theft of trade secrets, sabotage of UK interests and safety and foreign interference. Offences can be committed by individuals as well as companies.
Further, the Act also introduces a new registration scheme for persons involved in political influence activities and contains a suite of wide-ranging investigative powers.
