Course description

The PG Dip Career Guidance / Qualification in Careers Guidance is offered as both a full-time and part-time dual-award course that provides professional training and a qualification for work as a career guidance practitioner. It is accredited by and meets the learning outcomes laid down by the professional body, the Career Development Institute, who have also commended the Careers Guidance course for its professional links and excellent teaching team.

Course content
The course has been designed to give you the opportunity to gain the skills and theoretical knowledge required of a guidance practitioner, including career guidance interviewing and group work skills. The learning is underpinned by a comprehensive understanding of associated pedagogy of career learning and development theory and allied theoretical perspectives.

You will learn about policy, practice and theories underpinning career guidance, equalityand diversity, curriculum design and career learning, partnership work including advocacy, labour market information and research based practice. On this course you will also:

  • gain a qualification accredited by the Career Development Institute; and,
  • benefit from practical work based activities.

Core modules may include;

  • One-to-one Guidance Interactions and Allied Theoretical Perspectives (Part 1).
  • Ethics, Values and Reflective Practice in a Guidance Context..
  • Labour Market Information.
  • One-to-one Career Guidance Interactions and Allied Theoretical Perspectives (Part 2).
  • Working in Partnership and Evidence Based Practice.
  • Career Related Learning.

Continuing Professional Learning and Development (CPLD)
If you are already working in the field but are not able to complete the full course then you may consider studying individual modules. The practical, relevant module content, means that our modules are perfect for practitioners' CPLD needs. Please get in contact for more information.

Assessment
A variety of assessment methods are used to prepare students for work in career guidance. A range of skills and knowledge are assessed through practical assessments (for example, interviewing and group work) and through written assignments. A portfolio of evidence is also produced, which provides evidence of students skills and knowledge-base.

Please note that this course is accredited by the professional body, the Career Development Institute.

How do you study?
This course combines academic study with skills-based work. Alongside the four modules taught at the University, the course incorporates a 12-week placement, which is taken with the same employer at intervals throughout the year in one, two and three-week blocks. Full-time students usually attend their placement for three days per week and part-time students for 1.5 days per week. Every student has a personal tutor to provide individual support and mentoring and a work-based mentor during periods of work-based learning.
