Course description

GCSE Science Package (ESOL) Level 2:

This a one year full-time intensive course for students whose first language is not English and who wish to study or retake their GCSEs science subjects. The one year intensive course covers GCSE Maths plus the three separate sciences: GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics. It also covers ESOL at Level 1 / 2. This is an interesting, enjoyable yet demanding course. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their understanding of scientific theory and its applications alongside developing their practical skills including developing their language skills.

The syllabus covered for each of the sciences consists of a subject core and extension material.

The Biology GCSE covers topics including Genetics, Cells, Environmental Studies, Human Behaviour and Biotechnology. The Chemistry GCSE covers topics including Atomic Structure, Chemical Reactions, Chemical Synthesis and Modern Applications. The Physics GCSE covers topics including Space Exploration, Electricity, Mechanics, Radioactivity and Medical Physics.

Students will also study GCSE Maths and ESOL at Level 1 or Level 2 as part of the ESOL Package course. All full-time students will have a personal tutor and access to a wide range of enrichment activities. Your course will give you an opportunity to develop skills in numeracy, literacy and communication, including speaking and listening skills and good study techniques.

Theory supported by practical work.

The syllabus consists of a subject core, additional and extension material. GCSE assessment will be linear in structure, so that examinations are taken at the end of the course. The Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life (L1/L2) will also be taken at the end of the course.

The GCSE Science programme allows students to progress onto Level 3 courses. It provides the basis for AS/A2 Biology, Chemistry and Physics or BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Applied Sciences.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Students need to have 5 x GCSEs grade 9-3 (grade A*- D) including English, maths and science. Students usually require an internal assessment to determine their suitability for the course. A satisfactory reference may be required.
