Course description

Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care - Intermediate:

This is the sole apprenticeship framework for people employed in delivering adult social care in England. This framework covers the health and social care sectors which include: the National Health Service, private providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

In social care, this framework provides a suitable way to meet the development and qualification needs of a variety of roles and job titles, including care workers, community, support and outreach workers, personal assistance, domiciliary care workers, supervisors and senior care workers. This qualification is suitable for existing staff who don’t already have a qualification and wish to progress within their organisation.

You must achieve a minimum of 46 credits to achieve this quali fication. Some of these units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your quali fication successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

The following units are mandatory:

  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
  • The role of the health and social care worker
  • Implement person-centred approaches in health and social care
  • Contribute to health and safety in health and social care
  • Handle information in health and social care settings.

Optional units:

  • Purpose and principles of independent advocacy
  • Understand mental well-being, mental health promotion and mental health problems
  • Dementia
  • Personalisation in social care
  • Infection
  • Cleaning, decontamination and waste management
  • Individuals with learning disabilities
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Autism
  • Impact of brain injuries
  • Awareness of sensory loss
  • Administering medicine
  • Dementia
  • Provide support for therapy sessions, mobility, to manage pain and discomfort, for journeys, for leisure activities
  • Health conditions
  • Support individuals in learning and development activities, for access to information about services and facilities, who are distressed, to eat and drink, to meet personal care needs, to manage continence
  • Independence in daily living
  • Foot care
  • Blood samples and specimens
  • Plan of care.

You will also complete courses in:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
  • Personal learning and thinking skills
  • Maths functional skills level 1
  • English functional skills level 1
  • Employment rights and responsibilities.

Suitability - Who should attend?

For the Intermediate Apprenticeship programme, candidates should be 16 years or older, working at least 30 hours per week in a health and social care setting. Candidates must also have been an EU resident for three years or more. Previous qualifications in care are not required but qualifications such as English and maths are desirable. Before commencing the apprenticeship, it will be necessary to undertake a criminal record check through the Disclosure and Barring Service to determine that applicants have no criminal offences.
