Course description

CAD for Improvers

Aimed at those who have attended a beginners’ class at NTU or elsewhere, or have prior experience in the software through work or studies, this course will further extend your knowledge of CAD programs.

The course will concentrate on AutoCAD and SolidWorks, with optional Photoshop and Illustrator support if you need it.

It is very useful for professionals working in 2D or 3D who already have computer experience but are in need of a boost.

It's also a great next step for those considering design-based degree in the future.

On this course, you will:

  • enhance your knowledge of how to produce technical drawings and measurements in AutoCAD
  • explore 3D CAD modelling in SolidWorks
  • develop your personal approach to CAD
  • complete set projects, but also have the option to work on an individual project relevant to your profession
  • render sketches
  • produce professional-quality presentation boards using Photoshop and Illustrator.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course, you'll have improved your skills in design software, and have examples of work for your portfolio.

In addition to these sessions on campus, there'll also be an online after-care session with your tutor and the group to discuss any technical questions you have.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.

You’ll work in our spacious IT suites equipped with industry standard software inlcuding AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Adobe Creative Cloud.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Here's what our previous attendees have said:

“The content was taught at a comfortable pace and covered a lot. It was very hands on and made use of ‘learning by doing’. The tutor was also very patient and friendly. Overall a fantastic course.” RA

“A very knowledgeable tutor who was very attentive." AM

Tutor profile: Sarah Turner is an artist and designer with her own business as well as teaching part time at NTU since 2009.

She graduated from the university with a BA (Hons) in Furniture and Product Design and now specialises in designing and making beautiful lighting made from waste materials.

Her work has been exhibited in Paris, Milan, LA, London and of course Nottingham, and she's completed some stunning and innovative commissions and light installations.
